Classic Chewy Sugar Cookies

Whether you're just filling the cookie jar or making some basic dough for a big round of holiday cookie decorating, this recipe will not let you down. They also make a great base for mix-ins of all kinds! Try rolling dough balls in sprinkles or cinnamon-sugar for fun variations.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 3/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. pure almond extract

Directions

    1. Step 1Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. 
    2. Step 2Beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes. Beat in egg, beating until combined. Beat in vanilla and almond extracts. Slowly beat in flour mixture until combined. (The dough will be a little soft.) 
    3. Step 3Scoop dough onto prepared baking sheets (about 1 1/2 tablespoons each), arranging them 2 inches apart. Bake until crisp around the edges, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on the pans for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
