Candy Cane Churros Are the Magical Treat Your Holiday Is Missing

There's something extra special about warm and cozy treats during the holidays, and that's where these festive churros come in. Shaped like candy canes and dusted in cinnamon and sugar, these are a fun treat to enjoy with a mug of cocoa on cold winter nights.

Ingredients

For the Cinnamon-Sugar Coating

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. ground cinnamon

For the Dough

  • 4 Tbsp. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
  • 3/4 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • Canola oil, for frying

Directions

    1. Step 1Make the cinnamon sugar coating: Combine sugar and ground cinnamon in a shallow dish or large zip-top plastic bag.
    2. Step 2Make the churro dough: Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine butter, salt, and 1 cup water in a medium pot. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until butter melts and mixture comes to a boil, 1 to 2 minutes. Immediately stir in flour all at once, and cook, stirring constantly, until mixture forms a cohesive mass and follows the spoon around the pan, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Transfer to a bowl and let cool, stirring occasionally to release steam, 10 minutes.
    3. Step 3Add cinnamon to dough and beat with an electric mixer on low speed until combined. Slowly beat in eggs, a little at a time, until mixture is smooth. Once eggs are incorporated, increase mixer speed to medium and beat for 1 minute. Transfer dough to a piping bag fitted with a ⅝-inch star tip. Pipe dough into 3-inch-long candy cane shapes on prepared baking sheets. Freeze 20 minutes.
    4. Step 4Pour oil in a deep straight-sided skillet or Dutch oven to a depth of 1½ inches. Heat to 375°F with a deep-fry thermometer attached. Peel churros off parchment and fry, in batches, stirring often, until light golden brown and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined baking sheet. While churros are still warm, toss a few at a time in cinnamon sugar mixture until coated. Serve warm.
