We may be used to Joe Swift commenting on other people's gardens – but what about his own? In a recent interview with the garden designer, TV presenter and author, for our May magazine issue (out now, subscribe here), Country Living asked Joe what his plans are for his own outdoor space this summer.

In amongst chat about gardening for beginners, this year's horticultural trends and Chelsea 2022 (Joe will be designing a garden for the RHS this year, in support of BBC Radio Two's 'Big Bee Challenge'), Joe talked tech when it comes to his private spaces. "I'm going to try out a bit of gardening technology this year," he told us excitedly.

"I've got a small garden in London and a larger garden in France that I've been working on. I love my garden in France," Joe told Country Living during our photoshoot. So, with a lot of lawn to handle, Joe's new personal venture this year is making sure he has the right tools – or should we say robots – to maintain it.

"I am thinking of getting a robot mower because they are meant to be absolutely fantastic. They only use a very small amount of electricity so they are very green as well."

And of course Joe has done his research when it comes to automated lawn mowers being a potential threat to small animals, and he reassures us they are completely safe.

"A lot of people say 'are they ok for hedgehogs?' But yea, they are fine for hedgehogs. They stop when they come into contact with anything."
