Putting used lemon halves in your dishwasher can help leave your plates zesty fresh, a clever new zero-waste hack has revealed.

According to TikTok user Chantel Mila, lemons can cut through grease and limescale naturally, deodorising dishes and restoring shine. All you need to do is add half a lemon to the top shelf of your dishwasher, load as usual and wash on a normal cycle.

"This is a tip to help minimise kitchen waste. I used lemons (squeezed and seeds removed) but you can also use lemon juice," Chantel said in her video. "Don't throw away the secret to your shiny dishes."

Before you rush to put your lemon in the dishwasher, always make sure you remove the seeds first as these can block up pipes. It's also advised to not do this on every cycle, as the strong citric acid could break down the rubber sealing on your appliance.

As well as being great to clean the inside of your dishwasher, lemons can also help shine your fridge, microwave and oven, too. A powerful cleaning agent, their antibacterial and antiseptic properties can cleverly help remove stains and smells.
