Brilliant retailers for all budgets

From high street favourites to under-the-radar gems, the UK has no shortage of inspiring sofa retailers – although that doesn't make the deceptively difficult task of choosing a sofa any easier.

“A sofa shouldn’t be an impulse purchase," says Jemma Jaques, the visual design lead at The Lounge Co. "Aside from your bed, it’s the one piece of furniture that you’re going to spend the most time on. Trends come and go, but you have to live with a sofa for 10-15 years."

While there are practical considerations that come with buying a sofa – are materials durable enough for a family or pets, will it fit through narrow doorways on delivery, can it comfortably accommodate extra guests – it's usually a lot more fun mulling over your choice of upholstery, the right amount of squish to its seats, and all the possible layouts in a living room.

What follows is a comprehensive guide to 28 of the best sofa retailers in the UK, with handy categories (best budget option, best traditional sofa, best for colour lovers and so on) to help you find the right fit.
