These surprising interior trends we thought were finished are finding new life
Have you ever noticed that interior design trends have a habit of coming back around if you wait long enough? And sometimes it's the ones you least expect.
Before you take that dated heirloom or knick-knack to the secondhand shop, you might want to think again: 2026 is shaping up to be a year for quiet vintage revival, and there could be a way to make your piece shine again.
From decorative ideas once dismissed as dated, to furniture that has gradually fallen out of favour, interiors in 2026 are all about reinterpreting familiar looks with a more relaxed, contemporary feel – proof that, when it comes to interior design, what’s old can still feel wonderfully fresh.
Here are the surprising pieces and trends seeing a revival in 2026, and how to make them work in your own home...
Bed skirts
Also known as a valance, bed skirts were kind of a big deal in the 1980s and early 1990s – and we couldn't be more thrilled that they are back in favour.
Frilled, pleated and scalloped bed skirts add warmth and texture to your bedroom, helping your bed to seem even more inviting. It's a great chance to add more colour and pattern for a more layered look, and one of the easiest ways to make your bedroom instantly feel more 'cottagecore'.
Plus, bed skirts hide clutter, freeing you up to stash boxes, baskets and drawers under your bed without your bedroom feeling too busy.
We've gathered some bed skirt ideas and inspiration to help you make this retro trend your own.
Gilt-framed paintings
While they may seem heavy and dated at first sight, gilt-framed oil paintings are being reinvented in 2026 using thoughtful positioning.
The trick is to subvert expectations. Where more modern prints can work hung more traditionally and symmetrically, older paintings feel fresher in a gallery wall layout. Consider mixing them with quirkier art pieces of different eras too, like Lisa Dawson has done in her striking hallway here.
And, best of all, it's easy to pick up excellent value gilt-framed paintings in charity shops and on online marketplaces.
Dark wood
It's survived years of being rejected, painted over and covered up – but now dark wood is well and truly back, and beloved by interior designs and antiques experts alike.
"Incorporating dark wood adds depth, warmth and a touch of elegance," says Amanda Smith Corston, interior stylist at Ted Todd. Vintage dark woods will also add colour and character.
If you're nervous, Amanda advises starting with freestanding pieces like dining tables or bookshelves, but warns "be sure to balance them with lighter elements such as upholstery and rugs to avoid making the room feel too heavy."

Patchwork quilts
Once the stuff of outdated bedrooms, patchwork is enjoying a well-deserved revival across both fashion and interiors.
To make it fresh, think outside the box by placing textiles in unexpected places. We love a quilt hung on a wall, either as statement wall hanging or over a bed acting as a headboard. All you need is some self-adhesive wall clips and you're good to go.
Stencilling
2026 is the year to get creative with a paintbrush. While stencilling is nothing new, it was particularly popular in the 1980s – making it another trend from that decade that is seeing a reinvention.
Consider adorning wooden floors with decorative checkerboards or borders, highlighting design features – like print designer Molly Mahon has on her fireplace mantel here – or upcycling a wooden furniture piece.
There are no rules on placement, but we'd recommend sticking to a limited palette of two to three colours to keep the look cohesive. Popular inspiration includes folk motifs and geometric patterns inspired by the Charleston group.
