Prince George gets "annoyed and confused" at how the roads near his school in London are full of litter, Prince William has revealed.

During an interview with BBC Newscast on BBC Sounds, the Duke of Cambridge said: "So George, at school recently, has been doing litter picking. I didn't realise, but talking to him the other day he was already showing that he was getting a bit confused.

"He was also a bit annoyed by the fact they went out litter picking one day and then the very next day they did the same route, same time, and pretty much all the same litter they picked up back again. And I think that, for him, he was trying to understand how and where it all came from."

Prince George may only be eight, but the Duke of Cambridge said he is "acutely aware" of the widened global warming worries and understands how the resources he uses at home impact the planet.

The Duke, who was speaking ahead of his environmental Earthshot Prize awards, added: "Charlotte is still a little bit young. She's still not quite sure. And actually Louis just enjoys playing outside the whole time. He lives outside. But I think it is slowly dawning on them that these things matter. I think when you're that young, you just want to have fun and enjoy it."

This comes after Prince William criticised space tourism, saying that the "world's greatest minds need to focus on trying to fix the Earth instead". His comments were made after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos flew Star Trek actor William Shatner into space on his Blue Origin jet — making him the oldest man to do so.

Last month, it was announced that the Duke will join forces with David Attenborough to present a new five-part landmark BBC documentary series, The Earthshot Prize: Repairing Our Planet, which will aim to give viewers reason to hope for a brighter future on planet Earth.

Running from Sunday 3rd October over two weeks on BBC One and iPlayer, the groundbreaking series looks past the problems we face and instead gives an insight into the coming sustainable revolution — highlighting all the good that is being done.

You can catch up on the first episode of The Earthshot Prize: Repairing Our Planet now on BBC iPlayer.
