As part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations next month, eight new cities have just been granted city status in Her Majesty's honour.

Milton Keynes in England, Dunfermline in Scotland and Bangor in Northern Ireland are among the winners who took part in the nationwide competition. For the first time, Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories were also eligible to apply for the title, with Stanley in the Falklands and Douglas in the Isle of Man also making the final eight.

Applicants were asked to talk about their distinct identity and community, as well as royal associations in the area. Some of those originally battling it out for the prize include Boston in Lincolnshire, Ballymena in County Antrim and Bournemouth in Dorset. The last competition to win civic honours ran 10 years ago to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, so it's no surprise so many entered.

In another first for the competition, an expert panel worked with Ministers to make recommendations, before being approved by Her Majesty. Winning city status can help provide a boost to local communities and open up new opportunities for those who live there.
