I’ve been coming to Whitstable for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Kent, trips to the coast were woven into my childhood, and returning now with my own children has been a way of keeping them connected to my roots.
Just an hour from London, it's long been our family’s favourite escape – close enough for spontaneous day trips, yet far enough away to feel restorative. And as the children have grown and changed, so has The Bubble.
The town still has its old-school seaside charm – fishing boats in the harbour, oyster shells underfoot and weatherboard cottages painted in faded seaside shades – but in recent years, a fresh wave of restaurants, shops, creativity and beachside hangouts has given the town a new energy without losing the character people came for in the first place.
Why Whitstable?
The joy of Whitstable is that there’s no pressure to do very much at all. You can spend hours drifting between the beach, harbour and high street, stopping only for coffee, oysters or a quick sea swim.
Even on grey-skied days, Whitstable is just as appealing, with cafés and pubs quickly filling with people warming up after windswept walks along the beach.
Whether you’re planning a family weekend, a food-filled escape with friends or simply in need of a restorative blast of sea air, here’s how to do Whitstable properly...
Things to do
Walk to Herne Bay
One of the best ways to explore the coastline is by bike. Rent one in Whitstable and follow the seafront towards Herne Bay, pedalling past weathered groynes and long stretches of open shoreline. The route is mostly flat and wonderfully scenic, with plenty of places to stop for coffee, ice cream or a quick paddle along the way.
Warm up in the sauna
One of Whitstable’s newer additions, Sea Scrub Sauna has quickly become a favourite for cold-water swimmers and wellness devotees alike. Book a session in the wood-fired beachside sauna, looking straight out across the sea, before braving an invigorating plunge into the water afterwards. Even in winter, you’ll find hardy locals wrapped in towels, clutching coffees and emerging pink-cheeked from the waves.
Take a boat trip
Seeing Whitstable from the water gives you a completely different perspective on the town. During the warmer months, local boat trips head out past the oyster beds and along the coastline, offering views back towards the beach huts, harbour and weatherboard cottages from the sea. Expect plenty of fresh air, swooping gulls and, if you’re lucky, the occasional seal bobbing nearby.
Browse the markets
Whitstable’s regular makers’ markets and vintage fairs are well worth timing your visit around. Expect rows of local ceramics, handmade jewellery, alongside small-batch candles and artisan food producers. The harbour market is particularly good for picking up gifts and meeting local makers.

The Lobster Shack
Right on the beach, The Lobster Shack is Whitstable on a postcard. Long communal tables spill onto the pebbles in summer, with seafood platters, cold rosé and live music drifting across the shoreline.

A lively little spot perfect for settling in over sharing plates and good wine.
Woodfire Kitchen
Come for the excellent stone-baked pizzas and stay for the relaxed coastal atmosphere.

If the crab and prawn tarts are there, buy them immediately. Ditto the oysters.

A Whitstable institution. Order battered cod and chips then head to the beach to watch the sun sink into the sea beside the Martello towers.
Whitstable Oyster Company kiosk
Whether you’re in the mood for Whitstable’s famous oysters or a paper bag of hot doughnuts from nearby The Forge, this stretch of the seafront delivers both equally well.

A Whitstable favourite for assembling the ultimate beach picnic. Pop in for excellent British cheeses, chutneys, crackers and bottles of wine, then head straight for the sea wall or beach huts to tuck in.
The Old Neptune
Known locally as The Neppy, this beachside pub is Whitstable at its absolute best. On sunny evenings, people perch along the sea wall balancing pints while the sun sets over the water.

Windy Corner Stores
Part café, part deli, part local institution, with excellent sandwiches and an effortlessly cool crowd.
The Larder
Small but perfectly formed, The Larder is part café, part deli and the sort of place you pop into for coffee and emerge from carrying armfuls of picnic supplies. Don’t leave without trying the salted caramel brownie.
