Powys in Wales has been crowned the best place for peace and quiet in a new study, thanks to its low traffic levels, tranquil countryside and lack of bustling towns.

With rich rolling green landscapes, waterfalls, undulating hills, moorlands, and heritage sites, it's no surprise this preserved county in Wales came first in the research conducted by Cottages in Northumberland. And, with just 26 people per square kilometre, anyone living here can enjoy the silent expanse of green and pleasant land.

Northumberland came second, thanks to its internationally recognised Northumberland Dark Sky Park offering miles of untouched land. In third and fourth place came the Scottish Highlands, and Argyll and Bute, respectively.

By breaking down the counties, council districts and regions throughout England, Wales and Scotland, the team were able to gather data on population count per square kilometre to see which areas are less busy.

Pembrokeshire also made the list

"At Cottages in Northumberland, we have spent time thinking about what peace and quiet really means: being away from towns and cities, having minimal human contact, staying in low-traffic areas, basing yourself with plenty of surrounding nature, and enjoying large expanses of countryside and big skies," the team explain.
