As a gardener, I adore the rich evergreen quality of boxwood shrubs, but don’t like that they require constant shaping, and lose their fullness over time. In fact, I just cut four overgrown boxwoods out of my yard. I’ve set my sights on faux boxwood topiaries, looking for an easy way to add some greenery back to that side of my house.

I see a lot of benefits to bringing artificial plants into the picture. First, it’s low-maintenance—no watering or trimming required, and no bugs to fret over. Plus, a faux boxwood topiary will add a new look to the porch in the time it takes to unbox the delivery. You don’t have to wait for a bush to grow, or worse, pay someone to keep it in shape. It can even be moved indoors if you want.

Here, I picked a variety of topiary shapes and sizes, and I made sure that they’re all designed to withstand the elements that come with outdoor use, so they won’t fade after one summer in the sun.

If you want to keep it simple, a faux boxwood ball topiary is a good place to start. In this set of two, each topiary is about 21 inches in diameter and comes in a weighted pot so they don’t tip over. The leaves are made of UV-resistant PVC, and I like that they have a realistic green ombre coloring, with a bit of light green at the tips.

Some topiaries are sculpted to perfection, but these are designed to look like they have a little growth on them. This is the style to get if a realistic look is your priority. You’ll still get symmetry here—two 24-inch topiaries that’ll look great flanking your front door. They also come with solid cement pots.

Spiral-shaped topiaries can be traced back to ancient Roman gardens! Instead of hiring someone to prune and maintain a small tree, here’s how to get a classic look with no fuss. Nearly Natural specializes in faux plants, and the realism here comes from its shaded leaves, trunk, and a vine running through the foliage. It’s 5 feet tall and only 9 inches wide, ideal for small porches, balcony decor, or adding greenery to the corner of a room.

For spaces that can handle the height, check out this set of two boxwood cone topiaries. They’re 4 feet tall from the bottom of the pot to the top of the topiary. I like that the pot is cement here, giving it a lot of stability and a more polished look than plastic. They also have a nice color variation in the leaves, for a touch of realism.

As a patio dining centerpiece or decor on a front-porch end table, this mini topiary is an elegant way to add greenery to your outdoor space. It’s 16 inches tall (there’s a 10-inch version too) and comes in a charming blue and white ceramic planter. It’s pretty enough to keep inside, too—on an entry table or even in a guest bath.

Classic greenery and ambient lighting? I love this pick for any place that people hang out to enjoy the night air. It’s a traditional shape but with a bit of asymmetrical growth to give it a natural look. There are 50 LED lights built in (batteries required). The base is filled with cement, so you can display it as-is or put it in an attractive pot to match your decor.

If you’re not exactly sure about the design you want, this one gives you options. Each ball can be raised and lowered on the trunk for a total height of 32 to 48 inches. Per the brand, it’s also UV-resistant. Wayfair customers say it’s easy to adjust, but suggest adding some weight to the container.

Not all topiaries have to be perfectly symmetrical, and I love how this one gives you structured greenery but in an eye-catching design. This topiary is about 3 feet tall, and the branches are somewhat bendable so you can tweak the arrangement to fit your space. Per the brand, it’s UV-resistant, which is great if you’re keeping it outside or near a sunny window.

This spike system is, frankly, a genius thing to pair with faux topiaries. It gives you the flexibility to install them not just in a planter, but straight into the ground wherever you like. Each 20-inch tree has a 7-inch built-in spike to keep it steady. The detailing on the faux wood trunk here is a fabulous realistic detail, too.

The art of topiary has a long history of featuring ornamental animal shapes, so I had to include at least one. Someone may want to drop over $7,000 on this T-Rex, but a 24-inch faux boxwood dog would be a cuter, and much more practical, addition to your garden or patio.

If you have extra outdoor planters sitting around but can’t decide what to do with them, grab a set of freestanding topiary balls. Each one is just under 16 inches in diameter, and you can put them anywhere—in a planter, in your garden, as a table centerpiece, or you can even add string lights and hang them from a tree branch. The possibilities are endless.
