One campaign group in Nottinghamshire has been bringing some festive cheer to lockdown by putting up Christmas decorations early — and they really have gone all out.

Let's Light Up Locally, which first started as a way to support NHS staff, has since attracted more than 400 members from around the country. From twinkling lights to scene-stealing trees, many households have been sharing their impressive displays as a way to boost spirits.

Some have been placing blow-up Santas outside their front door, while others have decked their homes in flashing lights.

"2020 has been a difficult year," says the campaign group. "It's no wonder many of us feel tired and a little bit hopeless. Now winter is approaching with long, dark nights ahead, it is important that we look after our mental wellbeing and try to bring some positivity back into our lives.

"The initiative aims to cheer up local communities by lighting up our festive lights early to bring some sparkle and cheer to us all. Show your support to Nottinghamshire NHS Trust and 'Let's Light Up Locally' on 1st November and spread that festive cheer."

In fact, clinical psychologist Dr Georgia Halls agrees, sharing that, for many, putting up Christmas decorations reminds us of good times, community and connection. "It's an activity we usually share with others and has an element of familiarity, which can be very comforting," she says.
