A new study reveals the top 15 dog breeds for running, ranking them based on energy, trainability and sociability.

The list includes a variety of breeds suited for different running styles, from long-distance companions like German Shepherds to energetic sprinters like Jack Russell Terriers.

Experts caution that not all dogs are suited for running, especially flat-faced breeds or puppies under 12 months.

If you're the type to lace up your trainers with a dog in tow, you're not alone. For many dog owners, running isn't just a solo activity, but a daily ritual shared with their pet. And now, thanks to a new study, we know which breeds make the very best running partners.

Online retailer SportsShoes.com dug into breed characteristics like energy, trainability, and sociability to uncover the top dogs for getting in some cardio.

But before you head outside, there are a few things to consider. Amanda Charles, Veterinary Surgeon at Dogs Trust, reminds us that every dog is different. "Always check with your vet first, especially if they're young, old, or have health issues."

Her top tips? Start slow, run on soft surfaces like grass or dirt, start slow to let your dog set the pace, and always bring water for much-needed hydration.

She also suggests avoiding running with flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs or Pugs, who can struggle with breathing and overheating. As for young puppies under 12 months? Consult your vet and let their joints properly develop before starting up a running routine.
