Monty Don has shared a heartbreaking image from the grave of his beloved dog, Golden Retriever Nigel, who passed away in 2020.

Posting on Instagram, the Gardeners World star simply wrote: "Nigel's grave". Taken in his beautiful Hertfordshire garden, the photograph shows a small mossy grave surrounded by white cyclamens and fallen leaves.

Fans expressed their support, with one person commenting: "They may be physically gone but they stay in our hearts forever". Another added: "How beautiful to have him still with you, in your garden – his garden. And what a lovely headstone, with the moss and the sweet flowers."

Nigel passed away from an illness in May 2020, aged 12. Paying tribute to his much-loved dog, Monty wrote: "I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died. To the end he was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self.

"But he was suddenly taken ill and he slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls. Rest now old friend. See you in the sweet bye and bye."

The beautiful pup regularly made an appearance on the gardening show and was adored by the many viewers (Nigel often received his own fan mail, too).

Back in 2017, Monty released a book titled Nigel: my family and other dogs, where he spoke about the love he had for his four-legged friends. In the book, he wrote: "I have always had a dog, or dogs. I cannot imagine life without them. I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer."

In October last year, the presenter announced the arrival of his new furry friend Ned. The puppy follows in the tradition of Monty and his wife Sarah's fondness of Golden Retrievers, as well as names beginning with the letter N.

The sweet pup, who often appears on Monty's Instagram, brings his total of dogs up to three, alongside fellow Golden Retriever Nellie (usually shortened to Nel), and Yorkshire Terrier, Patti.
