The cutest dog breeds in the world have been uncovered in a new study – and Dalmatians, Irish Water Spaniels and Wire Fox Terriers top the list.

Research, which was commissioned by pet insurance comparison site MoneyBeach.co.uk, turned to an ancient algebraic equation called the "golden ratio" to find out which breeds were the cutest. The team analysed key points on the animals' faces, including ears, eyes, the tongue and nostrils, comparing them to the mathematics outlined by the golden ratio.

While Dalmatians – made famous by Disney's 101 Dalmatians — scooped the top spot, other breeds on the list include Labradors, Jack Russell and the gorgeous Golden Retrievers.

"There's often a lot of discussion about which pet is the cutest, so we were keen to leave it up to science to settle the debate once and for all," Mike Rees, CEO of MoneyBeach.co.uk, said.

"The "golden ratio" is an equation that has been used for hundreds of years, so it's hard to argue with the results and it was fascinating to see breeds such as Rottweilers or the Basset Hound being favoured by the laws of science."
