The dog breeds most likely to be spoiled by their owners have been revealed in a new study, with adorable Dachshunds taking the top spot.

New data from the largest marketplace for pet care, Rover, uncovered the most pampered pooches by looking at exactly how much owners spend on their pups — and the winners may surprise you.

While the Dachshund was crowned the overall winner, other breeds likely to be living a life of luxury include the Cockapoo, French Bulldog, Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Retriever. According to Rover's survey results, 83% of dog parents spend up to £600 per year on non-essential items, with 11% splashing £819.50 on items including designer jumpers and fancy collars.

"With dogs being such an integral part of the family, it is no surprise that owners want to treat their pets with nice gifts," says Adem Fehmi, Rover's Canine Behaviourist.

"It's important to remember that, whilst adorable, dogs are a financial responsibility and the basic costs can tally up quickly. People looking to welcome a puppy into the home should ensure that they are able to afford the extra costs necessary to give a dog a happy and healthy life. Not just now, but over the lifetime of their pet."

Elsewhere in the study, dog owners fork out a fortune on gourmet treats (45%), glamorous dog beds (46%) and whip-smart technology, such as pet cams (25%). And it doesn't stop there: more than 34% even confessed they regularly treat their furry friends to a puppy parlour or grooming service.
